BodyMedia

BodyMediaI’ve seen some pretty expensive products in my time. I’ve seen diet pills selling for as much as $100 a bottle, and we buy knick knacks and other tools all the time! At Costco, you can find a pair of Shapeups for $50. But anywhere else, you would pay at least $100. And there are a number of other similar shoes that likewise sell for about $100, because we are willing to pay. It seems like we’ll do anything but buckle down with diet and exercise to lose weight.

How Does BodyMedia Work?

BodyMedia is an armband that comes with a specific app for your smartphone and a computer program that gets information from the armband. All of these work together to measure your daily exercise patterns, eating habits, and even your sleeping patterns.

Over time, the makers of BodyMedia hope that you will change your own habits, and therefore lose more weight the right way. But this all falls on you. In the end, BodyMedia is meant to help you to diet and exercise. It does not speed up your metabolism, and BodyMedia does not give you a specific diet plan to follow. Some would argue that BodyMedia has clinical studies. But I don’t see how.

The Clinical Studies

We should say or lack thereof. There are no clinical studies that support the idea that paying $250 for BodyMedia will help you to lose 3X the weight. There’s no clinical studies that suggest that BodyMedia will help you to lose weight at all. Maybe BodyMedia is talking about healthy diet and exercise.

But dieting with a friend can be just as motivating and just as effective. Some would even say that dieting with a friend can be more effective if your friend is the type to make fun of you and get you riled up, in a way that makes you want to keep going.

Conclusion

I’ve used some similar tools. I’ve used an app called Lose It on the iPhone, and I’ve seen quite a few other apps that are all FREE! Yes, you can buy other tools. I bought a resistance band years ago for $10. And obviously, a resistance band is meant to improve your workouts. Hell, I can now buy a workout DVD (unless you’re talking about P90X) for about $5-$10. And I can find a good diet pill for around $30-$50, which is why I’m puzzled. Why would anybody want to spend 10 or 20X more to get this?
